The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has reported a total of 5,372 deaths from the ongoing Ebola outbreak as of October 30, 2026, according to the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).

The outbreak has recorded 10,414 confirmed cases, resulting in a case fatality rate of 51.6%, meaning over half of those diagnosed have died from the disease.

This significant increase in fatalities reflects a retrospective data adjustment between local and provincial outbreak teams rather than a sudden surge in deaths.

The current outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which has no known vaccine or specific treatment. Health workers provide care based on symptoms.

Declared in mid-May 2026, the outbreak has challenged authorities, with about 80% of new cases occurring outside monitored contact chains, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This indicates many infections arise from unknown transmission routes.

In addition to the DRC, cases have been reported in Uganda, Kenya, and Nigeria, raising concerns about wider spread across Africa.
