Ebola outbreak in DR Congo faces resistance amid misinformation and fear

The Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo is severely hampered by misinformation and community distrust. Traditional beliefs and fear lead to resistance against health authorities, resulting in attacks on treatment centers and delayed care. The outbreak, ongoing since May, has recorded over 9,800 cases and 4,700 deaths, marking it the deadliest in Congo's history.

Fear and misinformation are significantly hindering the Ebola response in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), where communities deeply mistrust health authorities and cling to traditional explanations for the disease.

Zawadi Kavira Musubao’s family experienced this firsthand after her sister’s sudden death in August. Traditional healers and a pastor suggested poisoning and evil spirits as causes, leading the family to reject hospital treatment initially. This delay contributed to multiple deaths in the family, including Musubao’s son.

Her brother, Alphonse bin Kitobi Achou Taibo, the traditional chief of Bapakombe-Bakondo village near Beni, intervened by persuading family members to seek treatment at an Ebola center. He has since actively worked to raise awareness in his community, despite facing accusations and hostility.

The outbreak has provoked fierce resistance, with some communities attacking treatment centers and healthcare workers. Since May, more than 9,800 Ebola cases and over 4,700 deaths have been recorded, making it the deadliest Ebola outbreak in DR Congo’s history, according to the country’s health ministry.
