Sudan rejects Ethiopian claims of aiding northern rebels

Sudan's military has categorically denied Ethiopian army chief Birhanu Jula's allegations that Khartoum supports armed groups fighting in northern Ethiopia's Tigray region. The accusations come amid escalating conflict and regional tensions involving Sudan, Egypt, and Eritrea. Sudan insists on adherence to international law and good-neighbourly relations, while also accusing Ethiopia of supporting Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Sudan’s military has firmly rejected allegations made by Ethiopia’s army chief that it supports armed groups fighting Ethiopian federal troops in the northern Tigray region.

On Sunday, Ethiopian army chief Field Marshal Birhanu Jula accused Sudan, Egypt, and Eritrea of backing forces opposing Ethiopia’s federal government amid escalating conflict in Tigray. He claimed these external powers supply and support the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and allied forces.

In response, Sudan’s armed forces issued a statement late Sunday categorically denying the accusations, calling them “baseless” and reaffirming Sudan’s commitment to international law and good-neighbourly relations.

The tensions come after years of devastating civil war in Tigray between 2020 and 2022, which caused over 600,000 deaths according to African Union estimates. Fighting has recently intensified, raising fears of renewed widespread conflict.

Sudan has counter-accused Ethiopia of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), involved in Sudan’s internal war since April 2023. Khartoum also alleges that Ethiopia allows drone attacks coordinated with the United Arab Emirates to be launched from its territory, claims denied by both Addis Ababa and Abu Dhabi.

Egypt and Eritrea have not publicly responded to the Ethiopian accusations.
