South Sudan’s Election Commission calls for peaceful December polls

South Sudan’s National Elections Commission on Tuesday called on politicians and political parties to ensure a peaceful electoral process ahead of the general elections set for 22 December.
On the same day, President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional government, clearing the path for these elections, which will be the first since South Sudan’s independence in 2011.
“My appeal is to our politicians, to our political parties, to convert their political ideas into ballot paper and not bullets,” said Gabriel Bol Deng Majok, chairperson of the National Elections Commission.
The Commission emphasized that it is every politician’s, party’s, and citizen’s responsibility to ensure the elections proceed peacefully.
Preparations are underway, including approval of voter registration forms and assessment of registration centres across the country. Voting cards were also presented during the briefing.
Majok added, “Our role as a Commission is to level the playing field, to make sure the field is smooth, and there are rules and regulations to govern the 90-minute play.”
South Sudan’s transitional arrangements were established under a 2018 peace deal, but delays to key benchmarks have pushed back elections until now.
