Libya’s Tripoli paralyzed by floods; one dead amid heavy rains

Heavy rains in Tripoli, Libya, have caused widespread flooding, submerging vehicles and buildings, including the central hospital. The floods led to the death of a bank employee by electrocution. Heavy rains on Tuesday flooded the streets of Libya’s capital, Tripoli, paralyzing the city and tragically killing a bank employee by electrocution, according to his employer Jumhouria Bank.

The government ordered public services to urgently drain floodwaters, while security forces closed the capital’s ring road to manage the situation. The General Electricity Company cut power in some districts to reduce electrocution risks as floodwaters submerged utility boxes.

Videos on social media showed motorists escaping from cars filling with water, and flooding also affected buildings in the city center, including the central hospital where water entered corridors.

The National Meteorological Centre had forecast heavy rainfall across northern Libya, issuing warnings for residents near wadis and valleys. Despite annual efforts to clear drainage systems before the rainy season, streets regularly flood due to sand clogging drains.

On Tuesday morning, municipal trucks and road services worked to pump out mud and debris carried by the torrents into the city.
