Former Sudanese president Omar al Bashir is currently hospitalized in an army hospital in Khartoum due to health complications, his lawyer confirmed on Thursday.
The 82-year-old Bashir has spent most of his time since being ousted in 2019 between prison and hospital. He was convicted of corruption and illicit financing charges and was serving a prison sentence when the war in Sudan began in 2023.
His family has reported a worsening of his condition and has appealed for his evacuation to a medical facility abroad. They have renewed their call to Abdel Fattah al Burhan, head of Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council, to approve Bashir’s release and allow him to travel on humanitarian grounds.
