Pope Leo XIV Recovers Well After Lung Cancer Surgery in Rome
Pope Leo XIV, the first US-born pontiff, is recovering well after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung. Post-operative tests show normal progress, and he is out of bed and eating. A biopsy is pending to check if the cancer has spread.
Pope Leo XIV is recovering well after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
The 71-year-old pontiff, who was elected last year and leads the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics, is now out of bed, walking, and eating normally, according to doctors.
Post-operative tests have shown normal progress, but a biopsy is still awaited to determine whether the cancer has spread.
Visitors, including nun Angele Bilegue, expressed optimism about his recovery, noting the tumor was caught in time and removed successfully.
The Vatican has not yet released the biopsy results. Pope Leo XIV announced his surgery plans following Sunday prayers.
