Morocco’s Sale Festival Celebrates Women in Film and Adds Arabic Subtitles
The 19th Sale Film Festival in Morocco continues its tradition of championing women in cinema, featuring Arabic subtitles for the first time and honoring filmmakers like Mohammed Abderrahman Tazi.
The 19th edition of Morocco’s Sale Film Festival, held from September 28, continued its longstanding tradition of highlighting the contributions of women in the film industry, a practice upheld for 22 years.
This year, the festival introduced Arabic subtitles for the first time to enhance audience accessibility. Nine feature films competed in the fiction category, focusing on women’s roles, financing, and opportunities in cinema.
Several filmmakers were recognized with trophies, including Mohammed Abderrahman Tazi, the first male director to be honored by the festival. Tazi emphasized the importance of portraying women’s situations in Moroccan society and praised the dialogue between male and female filmmakers.
Filmmaker Baro Orokiatou highlighted the festival as a platform to explore women’s artistic contributions and discover new films for other African festivals such as the Panafricain Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou.
The event also featured a lively red carpet atmosphere, with attendees engaging with stars and fans alike.
