Egypt pledges to defend Saudi Arabia but denies plans to attack Yemen, says President Sisi

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced that Egypt's proposed military support to Saudi Arabia is strictly to defend Saudi territory and does not involve attacking Yemen. This declaration comes amid escalating Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, which have disrupted key infrastructure and oil exports. Egypt's parliament is considering authorization for this support, while some voices call for clarity on objectives and risks. Egypt's support reflects its strategic alliance with Saudi Arabia, a major backer of Cairo's government.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi declared on Wednesday that Egypt’s proposed military assistance to Saudi Arabia is intended solely to defend Saudi territory and does not include any offensive operations against Yemen.

Speaking at the Egypt Forum 2026, Sisi emphasized the need to protect the kingdom’s land and borders amid escalating instability in the region. He noted the importance of restoring stability to countries affected by conflict.

Earlier, Sisi requested parliamentary approval to support Saudi Arabia in its conflict with the Houthi movement “if requested.” The Egyptian parliament, dominated by supporters of the president, has held secret sessions but postponed further deliberations.

Following the speech, a high-level Egyptian delegation visited Riyadh, delivering a letter from Sisi to Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Mohammed bin Salman. The contents of the letter were not disclosed.

Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have intensified recently, leading to the closure of the kingdom’s main airport and postponement of a major investment conference. A maritime blockade by the Houthis threatens Saudi oil exports, raising regional and global concerns.

Saudi Arabia has garnered support from allies including France and the UK, which have deployed troops and fighter jets to aid in defense efforts.

Within Egypt, some parliamentarians have expressed concerns over the lack of clear objectives and the risks to Egyptian soldiers, recalling the country’s costly military involvement in Yemen during the 1960s.

Saudi Arabia remains a key ally and financial supporter of Egypt’s government since President Sisi’s rise to power in 2013. Sisi underscored the unacceptability of standing by while Saudi security is threatened, highlighting the kingdom’s past support for Egypt.
