Chris Brown avoided jail after pleading guilty to attacking music producer Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle at a London nightclub in February 2023. The 37-year-old singer was sentenced on Monday to eight months in prison, suspended for one year, by Southwark Crown Court.
Video footage showed Brown striking Diaw twice in the head during the incident at Tape, a private club in Mayfair. Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as dangerous but cited Brown’s guilty plea, stable employment, charity work, and recent clean record as reasons to suspend the custodial sentence.
Prosecutors dropped more serious charges including assault and having an offensive weapon after Brown’s plea. Brown’s friend and vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month suspended sentence.
Brown has a history of legal troubles, including a 2009 felony assault conviction, but has maintained a clean record in recent years. He apologized for the incident, which lasted about 20 seconds, and was cheered by fans outside court.
